Welcome to Thumos Podcast, where we explore the media power shifts that are shaping our world. Today's episode covers OpenAI's new ChatGPT iOS app, Instagram's challenge to Twitter, Montana's TikTok ban and Sam Altman's unique perspective on AI risks. Make sure you never miss an episode by subscribing to our podcast on your favourite app and stay informed every week! OpenAI has just launched a new ChatGPT iOS app that syncs user history across devices and offers voice input. The app has been released in the US and will soon be launched in other countries. By subscribing to the ChatGPT Plus, users gain access to OpenAI's GPT-4 model and additional features. The app also integrates OpenAI's speech-recognition system called Whisper for its voice input option, although some users have reported bugs with this feature. Android users can expect an app for their devices soon. On another note, Instagram is developing a new text-based app codenamed P92 or Barcelona, which is said to rival Twitter. With users signing in using their Instagram login credentials, the app will transfer followers, handles, bios, and verification over. The app will feature a feed, as well as the ability to create text posts up to 500 characters, including links, photos, and videos. Moderation tools will enable users to manage their replies and mentions. Recently, Montana became the first US state to ban TikTok, with government employees and the general public prohibited from using the app from 2024. The state has cited concerns over data privacy, claiming that China's Communist Party is harvesting personal data. In response, some TikTok creators have already filed a lawsuit opposing the ban for violating their first amendment rights. Critics also believe that VPN and other methods could help users bypass the ban. Other countries have previously banned TikTok due to similar privacy concerns. The FT covers OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's recent testimony before the Senate subcommittee, advocating for AI regulation and acknowledging the potential dangers of uncontrolled technology. Altman's appearance garnered significant attention and was described as "Altman-mania." Unlike other tech CEOs who faced hostility during congressional hearings, Altman's performance was well-received, positioning him as a potential tech mogul. Altman, often compared to Elon Musk, is known for his visionary mindset and willingness to make big bets in areas like fusion energy and secure cryptocurrency. As the CEO of OpenAI, Altman faces the challenge of balancing commercial success with the mission of benefiting humanity. Despite rejecting personal equity and emphasising societal implications, Altman's leadership and the success of ChatGPT could propel him to the forefront of the tech industry, distinguishing him as a unique and influential figure. Today we talked about OpenAI's new ChatGPT iOS app with voice input, Instagram's creation of a Twitter-like app, Montana's future ban on TikTok, and the OpenAI CEO's advocacy for AI regulation.
