Hello! First up, we have Google's newest development - a tool that can detect fake AI images. This comes after the infamous "puffer jacket Pope" incident, where an AI-generated image of the Pope in a puffer jacket went viral on social media. With the rise of AI-powered media, it's becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between what's real and what's not. Google's tool aims to combat this problem by detecting inconsistencies in the image that could indicate it was made by an AI. How successful it will be to mitigate against the spread of fake news and propaganda remains to be seen but it's a good first step. Next up, AI-powered search and the future of marketing. The Drum discusses the potential impact of AI-powered search engines on the future of marketing, highlighting how AI models like ChatGPT can revolutionise the advertising industry by delivering more engaging and immersive search experiences. The article emphasises four key considerations for marketers regarding the new generation of AI-powered search engines. First, it discusses how AI can improve the customer journey and purchase experience by understanding search queries. Second, it covers the rise of virtual influencers powered by AI and their potential to impact consumer behaviour. Third, it explores how AI can boost ROI by serving personalised ad content and optimising ad spend allocation. Finally, it highlights the importance of education to mitigate the risks associated with AI tools and ensure marketers stay ahead in the evolving AI landscape. Moving on, we've got some concerning news about cybersecurity. Researchers from Outpost24 have discovered more than 31,000 stolen corporate credentials for many of the UK’s leading footsie 100 companies on the dark web. This is a serious breach of security, as these logins could be used to access confidential information and private data. Key findings from the study reveal that 81% of the companies within the footsie 100 had at least one credential compromised and exposed on the dark web, and 38% of the total 31,135 stolen and leaked credentials were disclosed on the underground in the past 12 months. Experts suggest that organisations should adopt more sophisticated multifactor authentication methods and a zero-trust approach to cybersecurity to protect themselves. Finally, we want to touch on a thought-provoking podcast conversation between Jonah Peretti, Nick Denton, and Ben Smith on the Recode Media podcast about the past and future of digital news. With the rise of social media and AI, how will the media landscape change in the years to come? It's a fascinating topic that we'll be keeping an eye on. So, that's it for today's tech news update. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll see you next time! That's a wrap for today's Thumos Podcast where we covered Google's new tool for detecting fake AI images, the discovery of 31k Footsie 100 logins on the Dark Web, and the past and future of digital news - thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe!
